God the Father said to Bridget: “That which is more fervently loved by the heart is more frequently thought of and more diligently adored.” (BS, 112)

Saint Margaret of Cortona had been praying that God would favor her by showing her even greater marks of His love than He showed to every other man and woman in the world. While she was praying for this favor, Jesus said to her: “My child, you have not yet perfect charity, and in your present state you must walk in reverence even as in charity. And into your reverence there must enter a knowledge of yourself which will prevent you from ever asking anything for yourself with forwardness or elation of spirit.

”Perfect charity is found in the soul which by love is lifted up above itself and so passes onto Me that it prefers its fellow creatures to itself—like a man invited to a marriage feast. He would be one who allows others to take the most honorable places while he himself takes the lowest. He would be one who follows the others as they enter the king’s palace and does not seek to go before them. Yet don’t be upset because of this prayer of yours. Even as I forgave Peter when in an excess of love he cut off the ear of a man in the hour of My betrayal, so do I forgive you now.” (MC, 231–232)
